Wouldn't it be great if there was something like a security camera for wireless networks? It would have to be a kind of "super antenna" that could read the actual radio-frequency-carried information. Like an infrared camera, it could see around corners, and pre-process the collected images to tell the good guys from the bad guys. No need to watch the monitor screen all the time.
That would be something.
How about if the gizmo actually was able to read on-air associations of wireless LAN clients to access points, not just scanning for their addresses, but actually seeing the live traffic pairs? And, make it do this from multiple access points at the same time, so you don't need to buy one of these gizmos for every access point you own nobody can afford that, these days.
Magic. Gotta be.
While you're here playing "gee, what if" maybe the box could also see access points that belong to other people, so you could REALLY tell if a new access point was unauthorized and on your network causing a security risk, or, if it was just part of the network from the company next door?
That would be truly awesome.
Hey, wait how about something that watched ALL the wireless LAN data bands, 24x7, recording and analyzing all the comings and goings of legitimate data traffic and then securely sent the pre-processed information off-site, to be stored in a searchable archive?
That would be even better! (And you wouldn't need to fool around with the already-overworked server, or cough up the bucks to buy a new one.)
So, whether you were monitoring the wireless LANs that you own, in real-time, or analyzing a historical record, anything that popped up that wasn't legit, you could easily see it. (This is like science fiction, right?)
OK, you're dreaming here...
Make the analysis tool to be a common browser, with SSL access so you can check things from anywhere and add a friendly user interface so you can understand the data without having to go to school for it.
Now, THAT would be fantastic - if such a device existed.
It does exist. You've found it.
You, too, can now Capture the Sky.
